My Teaching Philosophy
Philosophy is about how a person defines something that concerns his field based from his perspective. It is necessary for every teacher to have a teaching philosophy in order for him to have a guide. A principled teacher is a successful teacher.
Learning is the realization of what the student did not really know. The student did not know it because it is not introduced to him or the student has not experienced it. I believe that learning must be continuous. There is learning if the student has realized something because it is amenable to his current principle. Knowledge is the acquired concept of the lesson; this mainly includes the comprehension of the student and how intensely they can relate and reflect to the lesson. The entire curriculum must offer subjects and skills that the students could use so that they will be well-equipped and prepared in facing life – not necessarily the specific subjects and skills. The good curriculum produces a well life-oriented student that knows how to deal with his own life.
Teacher’s primary role is to help students face life. By that teacher must have knowledge of who his students are. A teacher must possess various experiences that could possibly relate to his students’ lives and make it as a springboard in teaching the concept or subject. I consider that every student has unique experiences that influences his way of living, thinking, acting, decision making, and feeling. In order to learn, students must see first the relevance of the lesson to life. Students learn by reflecting on the prescribed concept and not just by knowing and/or understanding the concept.
My teaching philosophy is encapsulated in a simple way. It is like a plant growing on the ground: the plant itself is the representation of a sample student. The learning is the nutrients that a plant (student) should discover by extending its roots to make him grow healthier and bigger. Albeit the plant does not know where the nutrients are; he just extends and extends his roots because naturally all plants need to extend their roots like human, it is natural for us to learn and widen our knowledge. The soil that covers the needed nutrients of a plant is the life and it is up to the plant which course of soil (curriculum) he wants his roots will extend. Then the teacher cares for those plants.
